Yes, it is. Next Question...
Is hypnosis real on stage?
OK, you're not going to let me get away with a short answer like that, so let's clear this up. Yes, Hypnosis is real on stage, it's just really easy to look like it isn't and that people are pretending, especially when you don't know the people you are watching. After all, who are these people that are messing about on stage, what are they like in real life, are they outgoing performers in every day life, who knows?
The people that know them can tell they are hypnotised because they act differently, their behaviour has changed.
Of course it has, once you are "Hypnotised" you have put your trust in the stage hypnotist and are willing to follow the intructions/suggestions to do something that you wouldn't normally do and find it enjoyable. It's very freeing.
So folk act in a way that isn't within their usual comfort zone, they can sometimes come accross as natural or fake, it depends how well they get into the zone or try to please the hypnotist.
When you are Hypnotised, you are giving your Subconcious mind the chance to take over. It's your more playful side. Your concious mind is always telling your what to do. After all, you spend your waking day pretending to be what you want the world to see, we all have personalities that we change depending on our company. You are completly different with your close friends, than with your parents, teachers, boss or a priest.
We all wear a mask, of how we want the world to see us. Maybe it's not just how we act, but what we wear, what we drive, the kinds of things we do, from keep fit to making minature models or climbing mountains or playing with radios.
Everyone one us is unique and some like to be more unique than others, some like to blend in.
Until you take part in a Stage Hypnotist Show. Then you are there to use your imagination and be someone else. You are following suggestions that have no basis for reality in your waking life. They are strange dreams of a focused mind. That is all hypnosis is, Focus. Acute focus. While concentrating on the thing you have been asked to consider, you find yourself doing something you wouldn't normally do and enjoy the freedom to do it, in a safe place, free of judgement. After all, you are Hypnotised.
That's the reason it is so important that the Hypnotist takes care to only guide you to do what is safe and fun. Never embarrasing or dangerous. Not because You Would do it (because you have full control while "Under Hypnosis") it's just that it may make you uncomfortable and you would refuse to do it. Thus ends the show.
A great stage hypnotist (yes a Comedy Hypnotist is the same thing) would never ask you to do anything that is against your morals or ethics . The hypnotist doesn't know you, can't know what they are. So at the start of the show I would say:
"I am not going to ask, tell or make you do anything that is against your morals or ethics and if I accidentally do, you are under no obligation to do so. You can just sit there, relax and wait for a gentler suggestion. You are in control at all times, I am simply your guide. Follow the instructions to the best of your ability and see what happens. I want you to enjoy the experience, so have fun."
Now even this, though it covers me and helps to relax them, knowing I'm not some kind of monster, it can make them hold back a little.
However, there are those that take part who give it their whole and sometimes it's best to have a word in their ear if they are going over the top. A great hypnotist show is a balacing act. Some folk are shy and once hypnotised act like they rule the world. Others can be outgoing and once they take part withdraw and enjoy not being in control.
The main thing is to make sure that everyone feels safe, enjoys taking part and goes away with a new understanding of what it's like to be hypnotised. The honest fact is, you are hypnotised every single day. When you are working on a project, reading a book, watching a movie, playing golf, driving the car, anything you have to do that needs your complete concentration is Hypnosis. Absolute Focus.
So yeah, Hypnosis on Stage is Real. It can just look a little too good to be true sometimes and that's usually when we get the most laughs and it's the best show. When it looks like everyone is just having a blast pretending to do whatever it is that was suggested.
